Deadlines
The Submission Deadline has passed
- January 20, 2004 Expressions of interest and questions
- February 20, 2004 Submission of design sketches (100 word abstract, 6 pages maximum including relevant images - see below for details)
- March 10, 2004 Notification of acceptance or rejection
- March 25, 2004 Camera ready submission (PDF File)
Process
The submission process involves three steps:
- Consider recent work of your own or your team and select a design project that can be described as a design sketch, where you practiced iterative
design, tested a new methodology or used a familiar technique in a new setting to put People at the Center in Connecting with Technology.
Describe a
design sketch within the 6 page format (available as a Rich Text Format document or as an Adobe PDF document).
See below for more details on design sketches.
- After preparing the design sketch in the publication format, make an anonymous .pdf version which removes identifying information
(author name(s), references to "my lab" or "our studio", citations of "our award-winning design for XYZ product" and the like).
Make a cover page including the lead author's name and contact information, the title of the work, so that the chairs of the Forum
can match the reviews (by title) with your design sketch.
Read details below for more on
creating a cover sheet
- Package and send your submission and cover page electronically to
Read details below for instructions on packaging your submission.
Notes
- The design sketch Organize the material in any of several ways that suits the sketch being described. Let one of the following suggestions inspire you:
- An account of the design (rationale, process, outcomes and evaluation) of an innovative application, system, product or service
- Results from fieldwork and ethnography Findings, guidelines, standards proposals from studies of real world settings, or of technology
use in such settings, with clear relevance to the design and deployment of products and systems
- Methodologies and Tools New methods, processes, techniques, and tools for use in product, system or service design, development and
deployment
- Results from laboratory studies Findings, techniques, methods, etc. from controlled studies of systems, techniques,
and other phenomena relevant to the design of human-centered technologies
- Reflection on current issues in design which comment on insights about humanizing products, systems or services where
interactive technologies are employed.

Back to Process>>
- The Cover Sheet We will be following an anonymous reviewing process. Therefore, any obvious identifying information (such
as location-specific acknowledgements, or references to the authors' previous work using 1st person pronouns) should be excised from the proposal
submitted for review. Each submission must be accompanied by a cover sheet with:
- Name(s)
- Contact info including postal address / email for lead author only
- Title of submission
- Abstract (100 words)
Authors whose submissions are accepted should plan to do minimal revisions (as suggested by the jury) and add back in the
author(s) names immediately on notification of acceptance in early March.

- Packaging your Submission
- Please title your submission file (case sensitive, where "leadauthorlastname" is replaced by the lead author's last name, no spaces):
forum_leadauthorlastname.pdf
- Please create your cover sheet and title it:
forum_leadauthorlastname_cover.pdf
- Then, ZIP or STUFF the two PDF files into an archive, titled:
forum_leadauthorlastname.zip (for zip file formats) or
forum_leadauthorlastname.sit (for stuffit file formats)
- Then your submission to the FORUM for review.

Hints for a Successful Submission
• Author keywords will help readers find your case study in the ACM Digital Library.
• Mention the industry your work applies to, methodologies or approaches used, and other index terms.
• ACM Classification Keywords: The category H.5 applies to information interfaces and presentation.
The full list of categories for classifying work with a computing component can be found at www.acm.org/class/1998/
